Chinoiserie Style

A favorite among antique lamp and Victorian lampshade connoisseurs is the chinoiserie style.  Literally translating to “Chinese,” objects decorated in this manner tend to depict scenes of nature, florals, and pictorial scenes of leisure.  Chinoiseries blends well with Rococo styling due to the elaborate maximalist characteristics of each style. Chinoiserie patterns are often depicted in maximalist Victorian abodes as elegant wallpaper.

Lampshade Creation and Lamp Restoration

In effort to capture the beauty of the Chinoiseries style, Artist Crystal Hayes sourced antique silk embroideries, antique metal laces, and an antique lamp base that needed restoration. The Victorian lampshade foundation was set with hand-dyed silk in ombre blue. With each additional layer of hand-sewn textiles, the Chinosieries beauty emerged. The lampshade was completed with hand-strung crystal beads—literally-strung one by one--sewn to the lampshade. The antique lamp base was restored with new parts by a certified electrician to ensure decades of future use, then it was artfully hand-painted to ensure the antique lamp matches the lampshade perfectly.
