Reviving Art Deco with Not-so Victorian Lampshades

Is that Lamp art Deco or Victorian?

There’s something simply magical about 1920’s art deco styling!  The rich palette, geometric lines, and interesting patterns provide a sense of energy and excitement. Not surprisingly, the 1920’s left behind unique and beautiful antique lamps and textiles.   For artist Crystal Hayes at Elegance Lamps, antique textiles and lamps from the 1920’s are ideal materials for creating unique antique lamp and Victorian lampshades pairings.

The Difference Between Art Deco and Victorian Style Lamps

Art Deco and Victorian style lamps showcase distinct design aesthetics from different eras. Art Deco lamps, popular during the 1920s and 1930s, feature sleek lines, geometric shapes, and bold materials like chrome and glass. In contrast, Victorian style lamps, prominent during the 19th century, exhibit intricate details, ornate embellishments, and a preference for materials such as brass, crystal, and stained glass. While Art Deco emphasizes modernism and simplicity, Victorian style embraces opulence and romanticism, creating unique and distinctive lamp designs.

Crescent Moon Victorian Lampshade

While commonly called “Victorian” lampshades, they often aren’t Victorian at all—it’s simply an arbitrary name dedicated to unique and unusual lampshade frame styles. Many elaborate wire frames reflect art deco, art nouveau and neoclassical lines.  One of my enduring favorite Victorian lampshade shapes is the crescent moon lampshade, which reflects Art Deco lines.   Crescent moon Victorian lampshades frames yield amazing lampshades when crafted with period-appropriate textiles and handstrung beads—especially if the artist applies practical knowledge through usage of an authentic color palette and professional construction techniques.

Below is a fully restored antique lamp with a crescent moon Victorian lampshade, crated with genuine antique textiles made in the 1920’s. This hand sewn lampshade features hand dyed silk, metal lace, and antique metal trims.
