Sourcing Antique Textiles in Spain and Portugal

Elegance Lamps On a Quest for Antique Textiles in Spain

It is time again to replenish the stock of antique textiles, here at Elegance Lamps. This year, Elegance Lamps is in Spain and Portugal in search of historic textiles for creation of unique Victorian lampshades and luxury antique lamps. Stops along the way include Madrid and The Goth Quarter of Barcelona, as well as Lisbon, Portugal.

If you guessed that I’m searching for antique Chantilly mantillas and hand-tatted craft laces, you would be absolutely correct! While it is technically true that laces in Spain are predominantly imports from other parts of Europe beginning in the 17th century, I remain fascinated by the possibilities of what I will find.

I’m especially excited to visit antique lace shops in The Goth Quarter in Barcelona. Here, I hope to find treasures that have been carefully tucked-away for generations in attics all across Spain.

Sourcing Antique Textiles in Spain

Historic lace manufacturing in Spain holds a rich legacy that intertwines artistry and cultural heritage. From the intricate designs of Alençon lace to the delicate beauty of Valenciennes lace, Spanish artisans have perfected the craft over centuries. Lace-making flourished in regions like Catalonia and Andalusia, where skilled hands meticulously wove threads into exquisite patterns. The industry became an economic powerhouse during the 17th and 18th centuries, with Spanish lace adorning the clothing of nobility across Europe.

Today, Spain's lace-making tradition continues to captivate with its timeless elegance and enduring craftsmanship. It is a priviledge to source antique textiles in this lovely country.

Beautiful Portuguese Woven Fabrics

Portuguese hand-woven fabric showcases the skill and artistry of traditional craftsmanship. Passed down through generations, this fabric is meticulously woven using traditional techniques, resulting in unique patterns and textures. It embodies the cultural heritage and timeless beauty of Portugal's textile traditions.

Portuguese Cork Fabric

Portuguese cork fabric, known for its sustainability and versatility, has gained global recognition. Made from the bark of cork oak trees, it is lightweight, durable, and water-resistant, making it an ideal material for various applications, including fashion, accessories, and interior design.

I’ll post trip photos of textile finds on the Elegance Lamps Facebook paged located here: https://www.facebook.com/EleganceLampsSeattle.
