April showers bring May flowers, and the antique lamp offerings align with nature this month. Crystal Hayes at Elegance Lamps endeavored to fully restore an antique Tole style lamp and gave it new life with a professionally crafted handmade Victorian lampshade.
About Tole Antique Lamps
Tole antique lamps exude timeless charm and elegance. With their hand-painted metal bodies adorned with intricate floral motifs or scenic landscapes, these lamps serve as both functional lighting and exquisite works of art. Tole antique lamps, originating from 18th-century Europe, continue to captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike with their vintage allure and enduring craftsmanship.
Restoring the Antique Lamp Base
The antique lamp base required a great deal of love and attention. It was rewired by a certified electrician with new UL listed switches, socket, harp, and cord. Crystal meticulously sanded the antique lamp, then painted it by hand with a soft gold tone. The painted lamp was then sealed to protect it and provide decades of additional beauty. To complete the restoration, the ceramic flowers were cleaned and replaced.
Making the Victorian Lampshade
Once the antique lamp base was restored the lampshade creation process commenced. Victorian lampshade artist Crystal Hayes created the lampshade by hand by implementing processes handed down for generations—using a needle and thread. While other lampshade makers glue many elements of lampshades, Crystal prefers the quality and durability that results from sewing by hand. The finished lampshade features a soft and feminine shade of pink and it features fine silk, antique textiles, and handstrung beads.
All antique lamps deserve a second chance. It takes time and patience but the payoff is well worth the effort. Antique lamps will last many more decades with proper care as, the quality of antique lamps is far surpeior to anything that can be purchased new today.
