Making a Victorian Lampshade & Modern Lamp - May Queen

Fascinated by Victorian lampshades with a modern twist? Me, too! Here’s a fun step-by-step photo essay of the making process I engaged to create this beautiful lamp created with hand-dyed silk, handstrung beads, and hand painted modern lamp base. This is not your grandmother’s Victorian lampshade!

Making a Victorian lampshade

The "making" process in video format! "May Queen" Victorian lampshade and modern lamp, handmade by Crystal Hayes at www.elegancelamps.com. Surprisingly, the video creation process takes almost as long as the lampshade creation process, so I hope that you find joy in it!

The finished product! Beautiful, whimsical, and joyful! Handmade Victorian lampshade with hand-dyed silk, couture lace, hand-strung beads and painted by hand!

The vintage style Lampshade Making Process

Several steps along the path from lining to addition of dyed fabric, laces, and the beginning of bead strands. Every step along the process requires handwork with a needle and thread. If you are interested in stringing your own beads by hand as I have done here, be certain to set aside a great deal of time for that effort. I find it easiest to create a master bead strand and then memorize the pattern to ensure that each strand mirrors the master strand. In addition, don’t forget your math! You will need to know well in advance the number of each bead that will be required to ensure that you are able to finish the lamp.
